THESE are the days

Just discovered the most delightful blog, sweetest couple, the are-you-seriously-this-cool? human beings, and the best story to lighten my unnecessarily heavy load and brighten my afternoon.  Read, breath and smile.  We’re all pretty damn lucky.

stumped, i'm sure.....

Oh Hello, coolest DIY I've ever seen!  I can’t wait to begin you.  (although step no.2 is slightly disconcerting. A whole MONTH in between step 1 + 2? Oh well, good things come to those who wait, yes?).  If I make it to the final steps, I think it’d look really beautiful and natural if I just sealed it rather than stain it? Bravo, Karen from The Art of Doing Stuff. I dig your stump.

The really thorough and helpful play-by-play here. Translated idea, and charming picture above spotted here.

hot purple lips

A final contestant for the over-my-bed art, Hot Purple Lips by Monica Shulman. Kind of obsessed with it, and think it would look amazing in this frame. I will post my other option tomorrow, a concept I'm also kind of obsessed with. But if I win the power ball tomorrow, my first investment would be this. I will make enough money to afford a Massimo Vitali, I will make enough money to afford a Massimo Vitali.

a thousand years between

I came upon these perfectly whimsical and romantic photographs earlier today.  This is the song that popped into my head and is still playing like a pleasantly broken record.  These photographs, though they do not depict moments of my own life, incite my own precious memories that have found a home in my heart….the kind of memories that flood my conscious and simulate the way your stomach feels when you’re on a rollercoaster and you make a deep drop (but then again, I like rollercoasters).  The kind of memories that you recall as being utopian moments.  Sweet summer nights spent with friends on the beach, afternoons on your back porch talking with your sister, the scent of climbing roses and morning glories sifting in the humidity, a gathering of all of your friends and your family (the kind of marriage that only happens every year or so for weddings or graduation parties)—those days that are filled with so much love you feel like your heart could explode, or an afternoon by yourself, say laying on a hammock, when you feel like you’ve got all of the answers in that quiet moment.

No regrets, no dwelling, just sweet moments of times and places that you once were— a collection of memories you’re proud of, a collection of people you shared delicious meals with and given part of yourself to (and to them, you).  Ya know what I mean?  These pictures do it for me.  And my, what a wonderful way to transition into the weekend-- here's to making more.

Thinking how it used to be,
Does she still remember times like these?
To think of us again?
And I do.

I have been on a major hunt for some affordable, sweet, meaningful and simple art—something to place over my bed for now—something with a purpose and an understated affirmation (textual or pictorial) that would rejuvenate me in the morning and put my mind to rest before bed.  Artist Alyson Provax has answered my prayers with her Time Wasting Experiment series.  I love them all.  I’m going to order 2, to stack vertically on the wall over “my side” of the bed.  I’m leaning toward 0045 and 0023.  What do you guys think?

(be sure to read her artist’s statement on etsy, under each individual listing. You’ll want to be friends with her, I promise!)

National Starlett

via
Like the rest of the world, I was really saddened when hearing that Elizabeth Taylor passed away yesterday.  One of my first memories as a child is when my grandmother and I use to watch National Velvet, and how she always said it was her favorite movie.  Because of Velvet Brown, Elizabeth's brave and spirited character, I understood why my grandmother, with such similar traits, always considered this film to be such a wonderful influence for her young granddaughter.  At such a breezy, young age, I just thought Elizabeth Taylor was pretty but wish my grandmother would instead just put on Sleeping Beauty.  Sweet little memories aside, Ms. Taylor was unquestionably an original Hollywood starlet to be remembered.....and sadly, one of the last ones....but life goes on, and so do memories, and so does the influence of the then young actress in National Velvet, who bettered my life, and whose sparkle will never fade.

Hi friends! Hope everyone had a lovely weekend! I’m just back from mine –red eye flight and all—and cannot wait to share some wonderful pictures of la la land.  And la la land it was……I would literally give an arm or a leg to have stayed a couple extra days…weeks….ok, months! No seriously, I’m thinking about it.

In the meantime, here are some DIYs that are really innovative, creative and relevant….the kind of do-it-yourselfs you actually want to devote some manual labor toward doing.  And the budget of this 20-something’s is constantly on the market for some fresh ideas and ways to make my home as stylish and well-lived as someone with four times my salary (with a little extra charm even).  I’m kind of obsessed with the chevron striped rug….how crafty yet seamlessly crafted, dontcha think?  Do you, my lovely readers, know of any other great DIYs? Please share below if you do—I’d love to hear.

Hello friends! The day has come—I am making my first trip to Los Angeles, and I am so so SO excited.  This monsoon pending, I’ll be off in a few hours.  So until next week, au revoir (I’ll try to send some of that California sun your way). xo

oh, wow

I don’t know how I missed the memo about this ultimate cool photographer, but my heart literally swelled after looking at Max Wanger’s works of art.  And works of art they are—each with such an emotional, light presence.  Max’s lens captures a heightened sense of the world—every color, every surrounding—and highlights the world, in my opinion, at its most luminous.  Don’t these photographs remind you of the best kind of days?  The ones filled with so much love and so much beauty you feel like you could explode.  Thank you, Mr. Wanger, for bringing me back to an idyllic state of mind.

(p.s. after scrolling through a few images, I realized that this was the same ah-mazing photographer who shot Joanna Goodard's engagement photos. Ah ha! Looking familiar now?)

Hello everyone.  Meet my French alter ego!  Isn’t she sweet?  I don’t know anything about her - except that she’s rocking Toast’s Early Spring line - yet this image has got my yearning for a seat next to her at some charming European side walk cafĂ©. And that hairband….Très magnifique.

you + i

This song makes me happy all over. Thanks to my beautiful sis for sharing it with me this weekend.  Along with the truly magical memories of ordinary moments from this past weekend, I’m ticked pink to have taken this song away with me, too. Ah, weekends home and delightful music...

Oh, let’s get rich and buy our parents homes in the south of France,
Lets get rich and give everybody nice sweaters and teach them how to dance,
Let’s get rich and build our house on a mountain, making everybody look like ants,
From way up there, you and I, you and I. – ingrid michaelson

spring, scarves, splendor

Like anything pretty, I want to covet it—scarfs included.  I often feel funny in them, like they’re not the best accessory for my body, but I just love these little pieces of “pretty,” tossed gently in a conspicuous spot in my closet (my story), or draped around a tall, beautiful neck.  How delightful are these vintage silk scarves, sold in this sweet etsy shop? (by the way, killer prices, guys). Next stop: learning how to wrap these around my hair, '50s convertible crusin' style, obviously.

angel arm

Is it normal to be so touched by a bracelet?  I love, love, love jewels (I am often more confident in purchasing my jewelry than I am with clothing) but normally the only kind of metal that actually makes my heart skip a beat is the jewelry of my grandmother’s that I will often don, or perhaps a really phenomenal piece that is more art than an accessory.  But man, this dreamy cuff has really gotten me…..all teared up.  Sooo, maybe this is actually not normal, in which case I’ll attribute my heightened emotions to the way this gilded cuff is as much angelic as it is aesthetically soft and beautiful.  I always feel like I’m in the arms of an angel when I wear my grandmother’s gold knot earings (this is, in my opinion, why jewelry is so special)—and why I’m impressed with the craftsmanship and emotional association this bracelet in/unintentionally evokes.  Bravo, La Petite Princesse.  I cannot wait to slip this on my arm!

details

I can feel the motivation bubbling—a decorative storm (or mini shower) is about to occur in my apartment.  Since I’ve been at my current place (c. Nov. 1st), I’ve added the basics, splashed my walls with some color (albeit on completely random painting sprees) and have well, lived in this space for long enough now where I am able to see what works and what doesn’t.  I would like more art and texture in my bedroom, for my living room to be more cohesive (the beauty and downfall of living with a roommate= double the style, double the “things”) and would love to keep working on the little details that make a home special.  I think time is really the key to the latter (now can I stay put in one apartment for more than more than one lease cycle?)…and I suppose time has also been the underpinning of my decorating resting period.  But I feel a revelation coming on, and my, does it feel good.  Of course this revelation will probably start with a throw pillow….but hey, you’ve got to start somewhere, right?

(I’m having a maj-hor obsession with these beauties above. Where can I find this art? Who is the cool occupant of this space and how do I get to know him/her? And while I’m at it, is artist Xavier Veilhan single? I'm as sucker for anything Calder-esque)

in the stars

I know what you’re thinking: another day, another dollar, another astrology book. Yeah, yeah, yeah, I get it.  But besides an old favorite, "The Birthday Book," Colorstrology has colored me crazy with it's accuracy more than any other astrological text. I PROMISE this is worth checking out. I’d love to hear if see yourself here, too.

In the case of January 19th (me!-"innovative, unusual and complex"), it was these words that hit close to home:“You were born on the cusp of the old and the new way of doing things so you are often part of a revolution and a new way of seeing things.  Learn how to balance spontaneity with stability.”  This is, no joke, the story of my life.  Actually, the last bit of advice is aimed at an area where I often struggle finding harmony with.

Oh well, one day at a time. Good night everyone, xo.
